Prologue
A little girl flew. The hilltops were the best place for flying, in her opinion. Of course she didn't just rise off the ground. Flying was an art that required skill and concentration, and the little girl had neither, though she liked to think she did. To fly, you must concentrate on the wind currents and catch the right on to get you up in the air. Then there was the matter of staying up. The little girl squeezed her eyes shut as tight as possible. She wasn't sure if this helped or not but she did it anyway. Then, when she detected a current, she ran and jumped, and enjoyed the felling of weightlessness before the tug and the wind whipping in her face. She laughed out loud before she suddenly remembered the staying up part. she closed her eyes again. There wasn't another air current to jump to, and hers was dying fast. So she tried very hard to do the thing that she sometimes did on accident, the thing that was even more forbidden than flying. She summoned a gust of wind. The little girl wasn't very accomplished at wind summoning. As I said before, most of the time it was an accident. But today was different. She concentrated as hard as her distracted young mind could, bit her tongue, and pictured the wind in her mind's eye. Then, miraculously, the wind came. At first the little girl was exited. she had did it! She had summoned that wind and proved everyone (namely the orphanage matron,) wrong. Then her joy turned to panic as the wind pushed her of course towards the cliff! She screamed, and tried to summon another gust but it was to late. The little girl fell. She landed in a bush out cold. Nobody from the orphanage really cared what had happened to her. A search party consisting of two or three underpaid workers looked for her for about half an hour. They came back saying that the brat had probably run away, and good riddance. Only one person found the little girl after the fall. A kindly woman found her in he bush and gasped. At first she thought the girl was dead, but she checked, and thankfully she was breathing. The woman belonged to one of the viking tribes of the area, and was on her way back to her ship. She couldn't just leave the the little girl behind, so she picked her up, and went back to the rest of her tribe. Thus the little girls new life began. And if you are going to read her story, you should start calling her Tyra.
